Dental Veneers in Amstelveen: Everything You Need to Know Before Deciding

Veneers are one of those treatments that people either know a lot about or almost nothing about. They get a lot of attention in celebrity and lifestyle media — and not always for the right reasons. The reality is more nuanced: for the right patient, porcelain veneers are one of the most effective and natural-looking ways to transform a smile. But they're also permanent, so getting the decision right matters.

What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain — typically 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick — that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. The result is a tooth that looks completely natural but has a new colour, shape, and surface. Because the shell sits only on the front, less tooth structure is removed than with a crown, which covers the whole tooth.

Modern porcelain veneers are extremely thin — translucent enough to mimic the light-reflecting quality of natural enamel. When done well, they're virtually undetectable.

What Problems Do Veneers Fix?

Veneers are best suited for cosmetic changes to otherwise healthy teeth:
- Permanently stained teeth that don't respond to whitening — tetracycline staining and intrinsic discolouration fall into this category
- Chipped or worn front teeth: small chips and edges worn down over time can be restored with a natural-looking result
- Gaps between teeth (diastema): veneers can close gaps without orthodontic treatment in suitable cases
- Minor alignment issues: mild crookedness or unevenness can be corrected — though significant misalignment is better addressed with orthodontics first
- Short teeth: if teeth appear too small relative to the gum line, veneers can add length and proportion

Veneers vs. Crowns — Which Do You Actually Need?

This is one of the most common questions at Dentinn, and our guide on crown vs veneer goes into detail. The short version: if the tooth is cosmetically compromised but structurally sound, a veneer is usually preferable because it preserves more natural tooth structure. If the tooth has significant decay, a large filling, or has had a root canal, a crown is typically the better choice because it provides full coverage and protection.

The Process: What Happens at Each Appointment

Getting veneers at Dentinn takes two to three appointments:

Consultation: Dr. Gundogdu examines your teeth, discusses what you want to change, and advises whether veneers are the right solution — or whether another option (whitening, bonding, orthodontics) would give you a better result. This is the honest conversation that matters before anything irreversible happens.

Preparation: A thin layer of enamel — roughly the thickness of the veneer itself — is removed from the front surface of each tooth. This is permanent. Impressions (or a digital scan) are taken and sent to the dental lab.

Fitting: The finished veneers are tried in, colour is confirmed, and they're bonded permanently. Minor adjustments can be made at this stage.

Are Veneers Right for You? The Honest Assessment

Veneers work well when:
- The underlying teeth are healthy (no active decay or gum disease — check-up first)
- The expected change is realistic — veneers can improve but not fully correct significant alignment problems
- The patient understands they are permanent — the teeth underneath will always need some form of coverage
- You don't grind your teeth heavily — bruxism can crack veneers over time. If you have bruxism, we'd discuss a protective night guard as part of the plan

If you're unsure whether veneers are the right call for your situation, a consultation at Dentinn is the starting point — there's no pressure, and we'll always suggest the most conservative option that achieves the result you're after.

Frequently Asked Questions

With good care, porcelain veneers typically last 10–20 years. They can chip if you bite very hard foods or if you grind your teeth without a night guard. They're not permanent in the sense of lasting forever, but they are a durable long-term solution.
